Experimental Design of a Grounding Metamaterial with a Zero-Frequency Bandgap

Leiyu Yang, Lifeng Wang, Xiao Yu

Abstract: Metamaterials with ultrawide and ultralow frequency bandgaps have broad applications in engineering. In this work, a grounding metamaterial with internal vibrators is proposed. This metamaterial can produce a coupling bandgap and zero-frequency bandgap phenomenon. The influence of the parameters of the grounding model on the bandgap structure is studied. A novel experimental model is designed and manufactured via 3D printing. Models with different dimensions are used in the experiment. Both the coupling bandgap and zero-frequency bandgap phenomenon can be validated experimentally. This experiment demonstrates the effect of vibration reduction in different frequency ranges. The theoretically predicted transmittance is in good agreement with the experimental transmittance. The grounding metamaterial can be applied to vibration suppression in the ultrawide and ultralow frequency range in engineering.
